Michael McGarrity started writing detective novels set in New Mexico. I found him when he wrote an epic western in the Lonesome Dove style.
Finished that and had trouble putting it down. Picked up Mexican Hat, the second of his detective novels and now I'm waiting for the library to send me more.
Strongly recommend.
