Missing music in iTunes

I have a fairly large music collection.  Partly this is because I don't buy songs, only albums.  In the past when I've bought songs I found that I never listened to them.  If I don't like an artist enough to listen to the whole album, I end up just not listening at all.

I also buy CDs rather than download in general.  I may have a half dozen or so purchased downloads, but I like to have the physical CD so that I can re-rip it onto my computer in the future, even if it becomes unavailable on line.

Because the collection is so large I don't always know exactly what I have and this is where the current problem arises.

Music is disappearing from my iTunes.  I use iTunes because I have an 80GB iPod Classic which holds the whole collection (barely although that's another story) and it's easy to sync.  Add new music, plug in iPod, Sync.  I've tried other music organizers and they just didn't work as well.  Used Winamp for a while but then they went away and I went back to iTunes.

Today I was listening to Billy Currington while I did some chores around the house.  Realized that one of my favorite Currington songs, "Good Directions", had not played and went over to see why.  Album is missing.  I have it packed away with the CDs, I have it backed up electronically on my server, but it is not in iTunes and not in the iTunes library.  It used to be.  Where did it go?  I didn't remove it.

This has happened with disturbing regularity.  I can think of at least twenty times in the past year that I've decided to listen to an album that I haven't listened to in a while and I can't find it.  Check my server backup and there it is, but gone from iTunes.  It's not a simple case of missing files because then iTunes shows the album but puts a little red exclamation point by the file name, it's a case of them being completely gone.  It's as though I selected the album and chose to delete it completely.  Except that these aren't albums I would delete because they are albums that I enjoy even if I don't listen to them much.

Frustrating.
